La da da. Still nothing exciting going on in this one's life. It honestly makes me wonder what other people my age who aren't in school do with their lives -- I mean, besides work; that would obviously be a big part, but they must do *something* else. Or does everyone just go out to bars and get drunk ... ?
Anyway. All I ever do outside of work is be lazy. And play games.

I don't know why I've gotten so bad at updating. Perhaps it is because I don't have much of a "life." Self-reflection has been a bit painful for the last few months ... but I've never had much self-confidence, so I suppose that's nothing new. ( I AM CHAGRINED )

PSME - Toki no Kioku |
] |
Mmm. Yesterday was a milestone in my life as an anime fan. Finally, I own a copy of the Please Save My Earth OVA.
Not only is this anime based on my favorite manga, but it's out of print, and all of my previous attempts to order it resulted in failure. I'd despaired of finding a genuine copy with everything intact for a reasonable price, but strangely, cheaper copies have been appearing on amazon marketplace recently. Now, I know there are bootlegs out there, but I can be careful and thorough when it's important, so I read about 9 months worth of good reviews for a seller before I purchased my DVD.
It's was worth the wait.
PSME (anime) adapts the first few volumes of the 21-volume manga pretty skillfully. The early 90s production has rich animation, lovely music by Hajime Mizoguchi (with an end theme by Yoko Kanno!), and, of course, the complex characters and plot of the greatest manga of all time. (Well, I think so.)
Unfortunately, it's only six episodes long. This means we have nearly three hours of fascinating material ... followed by snatches of scenes from later in the manga (that aren't really explained) in lieu of a conclusion. To be fair, it would be impossible to cram everything else from the manga in -- like I said, the manga's 21 volumes long, and the anime could only cover a fraction of that. Those who worked on the anime tried to give some semblance of what happened after; it's not that what they managed was bad, or ruined what good work they had already done. It just ... really makes me wish that the whole manga could be adapted, since they did such a good job on the beginning.
Anyway, so many anime adaptions of good manga fail hard that I can't really be upset when this one is otherwise so good. If it had been a TV series instead of an OVA, the animation would probably be cheap-looking, and they still may not have gotten through the story.
And now that I have the DVD, I will be sure to subject as many of you as I can to it ^_^
(The rest of my life treads from bland to frustrating. I had an absolutely wretched toothache for a while -- this as soon as my earache ended -- but one of my home remedies must have worked, because it has thankfully subsided.)

OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!1111***~~~////~~~***
So, I was reading some chapter-by-chapter reactions to Breaking Dawn (the fourth book in S.Meyer's **~//~DAZZLING~//~** masterwork, The Twilight Saga I hope everyone knows me well enough not to take that seriously), as it seems it will be a while before I read BD unless I give in and place a hold on it. (I've been hoping it would come in while I was around so I could pull it off the book cart/shelf and check it out with no witnesses -- but, it keeps either going right back out or immediately gets more holds on it. Sigh.) I am doing it for the lulz, I swear. I'm what a certain site I stumbled upon would call an "LOLfan." I think the books (and movie) are terrible. They are also hilarious and I cannot stop.
Anyway.
Though I already knew a good bit about the, erm, plot (I hesitate to call it "plot" ...) of Breaking Dawn, there were still some things I didn't know.
There is a minor vampire character named Senna.
S.MEYER FREAKIN' NAMED A VAMPIRE SENNA.
(This be srz bznz, yo.)
This has nothing to do with me materially, but I'm (needlessly, I suppose) bothered by the fact that the series I so love to hate has a character with the same name as my alias (which I should note, I've been using for close to 10 years).
Though, it's not like my alias is oh-so-unique. My source of it was a character in Everworld, the series K.A. Applegate began work on while Animorphs was still publishing. (Actually, that Senna is a kind of ... well, let's just say that we are not much alike at all.) It's the name of a plant. It's a last name. It's also the first name of an apparently Mary-Sueish protagonist in one of the Bleach movies (another thing which bothers me).
But still. It's not exactly *common*, and so I can't help but wonder where S.Meyer dug it up :/ I really don't want anyone to think that Twilight is where I got my name from.
And I wanted to be a speshul snowflake like Bella!
... Or does this mean I'm even more speshul because I'm one of S.Meyer's vampires?
(Fun trivia! If you google "Senna," you won't find anything about me for many many pages. If you google "Senna vampire," my old pitas site is the fourth link -- or does google run its searches based on sites you've been and this is just how it appears for me? I dunno.)

Tales of Symphonia OVA - Almateria |
] |
So ... I finished up Tales of Symphonia yesterday afternoon. Now what do I do ...? o_o *needs to re-watch the OVA, as it'll make more sense now* ( Possible spoilers ) Anyway, the short of it is that I enjoyed the game. Maybe I'll write in more detail later, if anyone's interested. (Gotta have a review-centric post in the future, I guess.)
Now what, though? I still have three unfinished Tales games -- Phantasia (JP), Tempest (JP), and Destiny (ENG). I'm the furthest in Destiny (because I can read it!), but the old school amount of random battles (i.e., one about every four steps) makes me somewhat loath to play it. I don't remember exactly what I'm doing either, but I'm sure I could figure that out quickly enough with the use of a guide. I played Phantasia for maybe 10-15 minutes today, but though I understand the gist of things, a translation guide would *really* be nice, if just for confirmation that I'm reading things correctly. I know there's an English patch for the PSX version, but the guy who did the translation took down the text file of it a while back. If anyone has seen a translation file floating around that I can just read on my computer ...
Anyway. *shuffles off*

Jewel - Standing Still |
] |
Why am I so terrible at posting lately?
Stuff I've finished (somewhat) recently: Suppli (really good dorama series about life and work), Phoenix Wright 3 (DS game -- waaaah, why is it over?), Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (anime series -- hard to start, but good from there), Full Metal Panic! (anime series -- good beginning, good end, terrible middle), and Tales of Legendia (bittersweet ending that almost managed not to be cheesy, but despite that and the surprisingly easy final boss, my biggest feeling at the end was, "Thank goodness I'm done").
Oh, and books: Superior Saturday by Garth Nix (where is the next book? This one went too quickly!), 1-3 of the Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith (lol angst, yay! Damon is my favorite, but Elena and Stephen belong together), Extras by Scott Westerfeld (OK, enough about the "manga eyes" already! -- otherwise, pretty good, though not his best), The Last Days by Scott Westerfeld (very good, though I like Peeps just a bit more), and ... not The Host by Stephenie Meyer, because I just do not hate myself that much.
So now I've started Tales of Symphonia, which is enjoyable (even if Raine is a child abuser o.o) and have been working on Harvest Moon: Magical Melody as well (as a way to relieve the tension from playing Legendia and from actual work). I'm reading Thirteenth Child by Patricia C. Wrede.
Actual life stuff: There's so much, but in essence, so little. It all sums up in my feeling like all of my friends are going into the future, whether or not they have solid plans (and I'm happy for and proud of all of them), while I just stand still because I don't know which way to turn. The last time someone asked me what I wanted for the future, I couldn't even say, "Oh, I'm looking for a job in publishing." I just replied, "I'm trying to figure that out right now." I don't know what I want anymore. That really bothers me. I know everyone is worried about me and trying to be helpful but ... I'm in a terrible funk right now.
But, I'm sure a good deal of college grads (and high school grads and recently fired people) feel the same way. Right now, I'm just waiting.
... I guess this is why people do things like bike to the tip of Japan or catch a Greyhound to LA to "find themselves."
But anyway! I didn't post to be all srz bsns. I posted to fill out a meme!
Is there a hobby you want to take up? -Um, exercising regularly. I don't know why I've gotten so terrible about this.
What is your favorite time of day and why? -Evening, just after the sun has set and the stars and moon begin to come out. This is the time I always used to talk walks at Calvin ...
What kind of books do you read? -Fantasy/Scifi, YA lit, children's lit, occasionally classics
What is the weather like today? -Cool, with sudden rain showers.
What's a major wishlister of yours? -Something I really want (to do)? Travel (Europe?). Return to Japan. Become a wildly rich author.
Who is your celebrity crush? -Uhhhh ...
What's your current fandom/obsession/addiction? -I guess ... video games. At least, that's what sucks up most of my time right now.
What are you listening to right now? -A cricket chirping right outside the window (stupid crickets).
What food could you eat every day for weeks and not get sick of? -Ha ha, pizza. OH OH and melon pan ♥
What websites do you always visit when you go online? - LJ, gmail, ANN, AoD forums, a few blogs
What was the last thing you bought? -Hrmm. I think it was a sort of carbonated slushie (tasty!) at some ice cream place by a friend's house
What was the cutest thing you've seen today? -Uh, my cat? I haven't seen anything else cute today :(
Does the weather affect your mood? -Sometimes. I like rain and cloudy days, but sometimes in winter the lack of any visible sky for weeks on end can get oppressive. Really violent storms frighten me. (I'm talking the kind where lightning strikes right next to your window, and you can almost feel the air sizzle -- I remember too well the day a tree fell on my house.)
What is your zodiac sign? -Aquarius.
Do you want to learn another language? -Yes. Even though I'm pretty terrible at self-study.
What do you like to do when you need cheering up? -Take a walk. Dance around with my iPod, screaming at the top of my lungs. (These are not necessarily mutually exclusive.)
If you had to live in another country, what country would you live in? -Hrmm. Japan, Scotland, Australia ... all seem quite agreeable.
One thing you want to change about yourself. -My lack of motivation.
What are you looking forward to? -Um ... playing some more video games after work tomorrow, I guess. I don't have much of a life right now, heh.

August has begun, and I have $15 in Borders Bucks (thanks to a survey website that remarkably isn't a hoax) to spend. In the past, I had little trouble saying goodbye to my bonus, but when I stopped by the nearest Borders in July to check things out (haven't been there in a long time), I realized that there was a whole lot I was interested in that they weren't carrying/didn't have in stock. Many titles are "online only." Sigh. I have no experience with Borders' online store, so if anyone has used it, your feedback would be much appreciated. ( Meandering, wobbling, woeful silliness )

His and Her Circumstances - Into a Dream |
] |
I'm trying to find a way to share pictures that is not so tedious as the photobucket way (that is, where I slowly upload all the pics to photobucket, then laboriously copypasta all the links here and write about them -- it looks fine that way, but it takes *forever* which is why I've been loath to share the pics from my UK trip and the others I've taken the last nine months).
So. Since I have a yahoo account already, I signed up for flickr, and have a slideshow of my new bookshelves. Let me know what you think of this way -- I'm not sure I like the presentation as much as the photobucket way (you have to click "show info" to see my comments on the stuff, so please do that!), but it certainly seems easier. Of course, I only had like, 9 photos this time as opposed to the hundreds I dealt with during my Japan semester ...
Slideshow HERE!
Anyway, enjoy!
In other news, I've been re-watching His and Her Circumstances. It's the anime made of my favorite high school genre shoujo manga (Kare Kano -- as opposed to Please Save My Earth, which I consider my favorite shoujo manga and my favorite manga period), and I forgot how much I love the first 3/4 of the show -- in the last part, the production staff seemed to have thrown up their hands and given up, as there are a bunch of recaps, a filler episode right before the end, ridiculous animation techniques (well, that's the rest of the show too -- can we even call this animation when we're just staring at stills basically pulled right from the manga?), and well, the story stops in a pretty bad spot with no real attempt made for closure. But like I said, before that, the series is a pretty good adaptation of the first few volumes of the excellent manga, with a little bit more "crazy" thrown in, perhaps, thanks to the wacky animation decisions (let's make them look like crayon drawings done by an 8 year old!). Yup. I also forgot that Akira Ishida voices Kazuma! No wonder I love that kid (not to mention that he's a sweetheart in a rock back. And I love pretty much all the characters ...).

Persona 3 - Burn my Dread |
] |
Well.
-My parents procured for me three 7-ft-tall bookshelves. Massive! I'll post pics soon. It's so nice to have a place to put books, though they really dominate my room ^^; Thanks is due to craigslist and my mom's slight addiction to browsing stuff there XD
-I finished watching Eden of the East (the series) today. Whooo, good stuff, but there are still two (2!) movies to go, so the story is not finished by any means. I haven't decided yet what to rate Eden. There are so many good things about it (the humor, the intrigue, the characters, the hoards of naked man-flesh and johnnies), but it's hard to say before seeing the movies if everything will have come together. So, now the wait until November, January, and then whenever someone subs the movies x.x In the meantime, I'd definitely like to re-watch the series so I can try to catch hold of all the nuances.
-lol Yuri Lowenthal you are everywhere. In my Ultra Maniac (Tsujiai!), in my Persona 3, and even in my Scrapped Princess?! Yes, Yuri Lowenthal voices Leo. I feel more desire to watch the dub of Sutepri than ever before.
-Speaking of P3, I'm nearing the end of the game. I'm on the final month, and I took the opportunity to watch the bad "happy" end before again steering toward my true destiny. (Bad as in, it's not the "true" end; "happy" as in, on the surface it's happy until you remember, oh, right, the world's gonna end.) Persona 3 is such an interesting game ... the bulk of it is non-linear, but in this case, I don't mind. You get to know so many people through Social Links ... even the NPCs who just sit at the train station or hang out at the club have different things to say every month or so, and I feel like I've even gotten to know them pretty well. I don't think P3 will displace any of my current favorite games, but it's definitely been a good one thus far. (Well, and even after I play the end of the game, I have FES, so then I get to play the "extra" portion which is like 30+ hours orz)
Erm, that's all for now. Tomorrow I have another wedding to attend in GR, so I'll be hitting the road once more.

Scandal - Start |
] |
I keep meaning to update, but somehow never get to it. Not that there's terribly much to say, but ...
1) I finished Star Ocean Second Evolution. Good game. 80+ endings. Unfortunately, because of all my pickpocketing (which, if you do outside of PAs, will cause random members of your party to lose relationship/friendship points with you -- I didn't know this until over halfway through the game), Claude ended up alone T_T Well, next time, I will get one of the other endings!
(Also, Rena, who is obviously supposed to be with Claude in the cutscenes, ended up with Ashton, who is adorable but kind of gay. WTF. I should say, it wasn't really a romantic ending; she just took him back to her hometown and he became friends with everybody.)
I tried to finish up my PS1 version of SO2 since I was near the end when I quit (and I wanted to see a different ending). I made it to the final boss, but ... I think the PSP version is a whole lot easier (not to mention, the graphics are smoother and the anime characters prettier). My PS1 party members are 10 or more levels higher than my PSP ones were, but I couldn't seem to manage. Well, maybe I'll try again later ...
2) Apparently, L.J. Smith's Vampire Diaries book series is being made into a TV series. ROFLs. I found this out by seeing a commercial on channel 9 (the CW? Something like that). I couldn't believe it. And yet, I can, because TV execs are not so blind as to not have noticed the Twilight mania. Hot vampires and human girls? It must sell! (Anyway, L.J. Smith's characters could kick S. Meyer's characters' butts any day of the week.) More info can be found on Vampire Diaries Online. Even though it's kind of ridiculous, I'm pretty excited for it (since, OMIGOSH, L.J. Smith!), and I'll definitely be watching it come fall 2009.
3) Read some books too. Good Omens, by the esteemed Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, was very good. The Raging Quiet, by Sherryl Jorden, not as much (matyr!Sue for the win!). I might rant on the second in the future. Right now I'm reading Magic Kingdom for Sale -- Sold!, and it's interesting though very slow at this point. Ah, well.
Tomorrow I'm planning to go to a writers' meeting at a local library. I still haven't decided if I want to bring anything of mine to read -- I've never gone before so I have no idea what kind of environment it is, and I don't know if I'm quite ready to share my stuff with complete strangers. I don't even know if it's a regularly meeting group; I guess I'll find out. Wish me luck!
OK, that's all for now.

Some anime blog was doing a collaborative list of top 12 male and female characters, and it inspired me to do the same. ... Which, I should say, was pretty hard. My listings are fairly fluid (certainly affected by which anime I've watched recently), and it was tough to limit myself on the guys' side, and tough to think of enough characters on the girls' side. But, here we are, ridiculous list and reasoning ahead ^^ ( My Top 12 Anime Characters -- in no particular order )
